Day Fourteen - Exceptional, Superb & Powerful Life!

14.  Don't waste your precious energy on gissip, issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you cannot control.  Instead, invest your energy in the positive present moment.

Oh boy.  This is a good one.  It is so easy to get caught up in the gossip.  Who is doing what?  Did you hear about so-and-so?  I think that it is human nature to want to know what others are doing.  I lived in California for awhile and found myself all cuaght up in what the celebreties were doing all the time.  I was addicted to that TMZ show.  The reality of it is, its none of my business!  Why can't we all just mind our own business?!?

Because other people's lives are so much more exciting than ours!  The truth is, scandal and shocking things aren't good for us.  If you find yourself drawn to the drama, that is just bringing some into your own life.  Finding and focusing on the good things is the best way to go.

  • What goes on in your mind can really determine your actions and decides whether you're positive or negative. If you always think negative thoughts, you're always going to turn out to be a negative person. It is better to think about positive thoughts.
  • Think of the cup as half full and filling up!
  • Making progress is success. If you are positively engaging events within yourself - in your thoughts - then there is no goal in which you can not make progress. Your engaged goals are powerful!
  • Think about what you want (that's a goal), not about what you don't want (that's worry). Goal driven activity requires positive thinking.
  • Be sure to cultivate positive thinking for purposeful reasons - to enhance the quality of your life and the lives of others.
  • Find some things positive to say to yourself and repeat them often. Use statements such as "I am a very positive person," "I am very capable," "I can do anything when I put my mind to work on it," and "I can do it."
  • Print these instructions and keep them for reference.
  • Don't give up. Good habits can replace bad ones by continuous perseverance.
  • Hang around negativity and you'll become negative. Hang around positive people and you will become and be like them!
  • Remember that you’re in control of your thoughts. If you’re thinking negative, you can change it anytime by thinking about something positive.
  • Getting your blood flowing by exercising increases your energy. When you have energy, you think positive.
  • Every morning look at yourself in the mirror and think about five good qualities you have.
  • Try meditating. This will make your mind sharp and fill you with positive ideas.
  • Smile at strangers. Although this may seem a little weird, it actually makes you feel more positive and happy. You may even brighten that other person's day.
  • Listen to music. It's a great way to remain positive.
  • Volunteering. Helping others leads to a happier outlook on life.

Day Thirteen - Exceptional, Superb & Powerful Life!

13.  Clear the clutter from your house, your car, your desk and let new and flowing energy into your life!

Clearing clutter feels sooooooooo good! I have to admit, I used to be a collector of things.  If I found a good sale on something, I would buy it because someday I was going to use it.   I ended up with a garage FULL of stuff.  It was great when that moment that I needed something arrived and I had it, if only I could find it!   I did lots of arts and craft stuff for the school and it was nice to always have so much on hand.

We had to move and that is when it hit me.  Too much stuff.  I was venturing towards being a hoarder!  My grandpa was definitely a hoarder, so it would be no surprise to anyone.  My Mom is pretty close to a hoarder and it drives my Dad crazy.

Taking the steps to determine a value of your stuff and then letting it go is a good feeling... once you get over the initial "oh my gosh, I can't get rid of my stuff" feeling.  Here are some steps to help get you started!

Here's what Rodika Tchi has to say about clutter:

In feng shui, clutter is viewed from a slightly different viewpoint. Not only clutter complicates your life, disturbs the view of your home and steals precious time, it also steals your vital energy. Now, this is serious. Do you really want to let clutter drain your precious life energy?

What is clutter?

Feng shui definition: Clutter is low, stagnant, blocked energy that drains energy from you and lowers the quality of your life.

Down-to-earth definition: Anything that you do not use, do not like, or do not have a place for IS clutter. Either use it, like it, find a place for it, or let it go. It is that easy.

Even if your place looks seemingly OK on the surface and is not overrun by clutter, can you honestly say the same about your closets, your garage or your laundry room? How about the places that are mostly hidden, such as your kitchen cupboards, for example?

~ steps below taken from ~ 7 Ways to Clear the Clutter and Find your Life

1. Start small

Just like creating new habits the trick is to start small. Don’t try to tackle too much all at once; it usually ends in frustration, dissatisfaction and ultimate abandon. Choose a small area or one drawer to get started and schedule time to complete the task. It usually works better to schedule time rather than have a physical plan because often the de-cluttering takes longer than expected. If you spend hours trying to de-clutter a space to not achieve it can turn the expedition into a negative experience.

2. Make sure everything has a place

One of the reasons we allow clutter to accumulate is because we don’t know where to put it. We move things around from surface to surface not quite knowing what to do with them. Create a place for everything and if necessary go out and buy more storage containers. But be careful, the more storage containers you have the more you will fill.

3. One in two out

You have probably heard of this tactic before. Every time you buy something new, throw out or give away two things, this will ensure the quantity of items you own decreases over time rather than the gradual creep of belongings. It also prevents you from buying unnecessary things as you know you will have to throw out some possessions when you get home.

4. Become a charity King or Queen

Know that every time you donate clothes, books or toys to a charity shop you are helping people. Rather than let things clutter up your drawers they could be doing good in the world. Separating yourself from your belongings becomes easier if you are doing it for a purpose.

5. Remember objects don’t define the person

For years I kept a snowboard in the corner of my sitting room as it represented the person I wanted to be — bold and carefree. I live in a country that doesn’t have mountains with snow. I wasn’t very good at the sport and at best I could go snowboarding once a year. Sounds ridiculous when you look at it objectively, but for me it represented a part of my life I didn’t want to let go of. Selling my snowboarding gear was a liberating experience. I felt the moment I let it go out the door I matured. I am who I am and don’t need an object to express my personality.

6. Create rituals to prevent clutter creep

If you manage to de-clutter and get things under control, how are you going to prevent the clutter from coming back into your life?
Create rituals. Do the washing up straight after dinner, get the children to tidy their toys before bed, tidy up time comes before lunch every day. By creating rituals for certain events they become so much a part of your everyday life they don’t feel like a hassle. These little rituals just like brushing your teeth before bed become semi-automated and help to keep your life under control.

7. Music and celebration

Turn on your favorite music and get started. Music can uplift and inspire, it can turn the most mundane task into something enjoyable. When you have finished acknowledge your achievements and reward yourself, something you should do with all areas of your life. Great things deserve recognition and celebration. Treat yourself and admire your hard work.

Day Twelve - Exceptional, Superb & Powerful Life!

12.  Try to make at least three people smile each day.

I don't know how many times I've smiled at someone in passing and they just look back at me like "what are you smiling about?"  What is happening to the world?  Why so grumpy?  I have gotten to the point that I am surprised when someone actually smiles back.  I guess that is the important thing, just because they don't return the smile doesn't mean that I should join them and not smile anymore.  Who knows if I will be the smile that someone needed today!

There are quite a few different opinions floating around out there about "it takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile."  Either way, smiling is so much better!

7 Things to Smile About

1. Smiling can make you happy (even when you're not).

It turns out that the simple act of smiling sends a message to your brain that you're happy. And when you're happy, your body pumps out all kinds of feel-good endorphins. This reaction has been studied since the 1980s and has been proven a number of times. In 1984, an article in the journal Science showed that when people mimic different emotional expressions, their bodies produce physiological changes that reflect the emotion, too, such as changes in heart and breathing rate. Another German study found that people felt happy just by holding a small pen clenched in their teeth, imitating a smile.

Just remember that the research goes both ways. When the people in the first study frowned, they felt less happy, and in the German study, people who held a pen in their protruding lips, imitating a pout, felt unhappy. So the next time you feel sad or upset, try smiling. It just might make your body—and therefore you—feel better.

2. Smiling can make others happy.

"When you're smilin', the whole world smiles with you." Ever heard that song, made famous by Louis Armstrong? Well, it's true. Research shows that smiling is contagious. Ever been around someone who just had something fantastic happen to him or her? Isn't it almost impossible not to feel good, too? Studies show that something as simple as seeing a friend smile can activate the muscles in your face to make that same expression, without you even being aware that you are doing it. Crazy, right?

But remember that this, too, can be for better or for worse. You know the expression "misery loves company"? Frowns act just like smiles, just with a negative reaction, so choose to smile and watch the world smile back!

3. Smiling makes you more attractive.

Ever wonder why are we always asked to smile in photos? Because people usually look their best—and happiest—when smiling. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, 96 percent of American adults believe an attractive smile makes a person more appealing to members of the opposite sex. So the next time you are about to ask someone on a date, smile. It'll make them feel happier (see No. 2), and you'll already be more attractive in his or her eyes!

4. Smiling can help you de-stress.

The next time you're stressed about work or realize that your favorite jeans feel a little snug, don't freak out. Take a few deep breaths and smile! Smiling may help to reduce symptoms associated with anxiety. When that smile signals to your brain that you're feeling happy (even though you're not really feeling happy...yet), your body will usually slow its breathing and heart rate.

Reducing stress is so important for health, too, as it can lower blood pressure, improve digestion and regulate blood sugar. Note that this works during workouts, too! If you're having a hard time getting through that last rep or getting those final 5 minutes in on the treadmill, smiling can do wonders!

5. Smiling can help you land a job.

If you're about to go on a job interview, you may think that your appearance is just about wearing nice clothes. Wrong! You can't just wear that suit; you have to wear it with a smile. In a study published in the December 2009 issue of Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, people looked at full-body photographs of 123 people they had never met. The people in the photos had one of two expressions: neutral (think your passport photo) or a smile. And guess what? When observers saw the photos of smiling people, they were more likely to think that the person in the photo was likable, confident, conscientious and stable. Sound like traits most companies want in an employee, right? So the next time you're dressing to impress, make sure to take that beautiful, natural smile with you!

6. Smiling can lead to laughter.

Have you ever laughed without smiling? It's pretty impossible to do. And it's funny how a smile here and a smile there with friends can turn into a whole fit of hysterical laughter. Numerous studies have been done on the health benefits of laughing, including how it acts like a mini workout that burns calories and works the abs. Laughter also helps blood flow, lowers blood sugar levels, reduces stress and improves sleep. It may also raise the level of infection-fighting antibodies in the body, which helps boost your immune system. So the moral of this story is smile—and laugh—often!

7. Smiling just feels good.

Have you ever found that smiling just feels good? Go ahead, smile now. Doesn't it feel natural? Make you feel happy to be alive? It sure does beat the heck out of a frown.

So the next time you're feeling down or out of sorts, try a smile. If you can't find a reason to smile, pop in a funny DVD, read the Sunday comics or call a friend. Heck, you may be able to even read the word smile and feel better. According to research published in Psychological Science, simply reading certain words may also have the same effect. Just like seeing someone else smile makes you smile, reading emotion verbs (like smile, grin, frown, etc.) can also activate specific facial muscles.

Isn't it time you turn that frown upside down? Now say "cheese!"

Day Eleven - Exceptional, Superb & Powerful Life

11.  Drink green tea and plenty of water.  Eat blueberries, wild Alaskan salmon, broccoli, almonds and walnuts.

There are plenty of lists of foods that we should eat, but what about the foods that we shouldn't eat?

 1. Wheat Bread
You can add wheat to literally any carbohydrate and label it as a wheat product. These days, you can get Whole Wheat Lucky Charms – do you really think that makes them healthy? If it isn’t 100% whole wheat, bread can contain enriched flour, which gives you a sugar spike and crash without any nutritional value. Basically, enriched flour means nutrients are stripped from the bread.

Swap it for: Fiber-rich breads that are 100% whole wheat. Other breads like multi grain and sprouted are good options too, as long as those are the first ingredients on the package. Better yet, if you want to cut 200 calories, try wrapping your sandwiches with romaine lettuce.

2. Dried Fruit
Sure, it’s got fiber. It also has tons of added sugar and sulfur to keep it preserved longer. YUM! Since the fruit is dried, it has at least 3 times more calories per volume than its fresh counterpart. A bag of banana chips has three times as many calories as a banana and 20% more fat.

Swap it for: Fresh is ALWAYS best with fruit! It will keep you feeling full longer, and you get all the nutrients that weren’t sucked out in the drying process.

3. Trail Mix
If you’re not on the trail, skip the trail mix. Packed with salted nuts, sugar covered raisins and even M&M’s, even a small handful can contain 300+ calories. Trail mix is a quick energy snack to people on the trail who need those extra calories to burn, but not a good option for healthful snacking. In your everyday life you don’t need that ton of sugar and salt.

Swap it for: A single portion serving of unsalted nuts. Measure it out from the bag so you know exactly how many to eat. A small handful of almonds can satisfy your hunger and give you a great nutrition boost until your next meal.

4. Flavored Soy Milk
Yes, soy can be a source of protein and potassium. But drinking the vanilla or chocolate flavors adds 10 grams of sugar and 50 calories per cup. No thanks!

Swap it for:  regular soy milk, or you could try almond milk or hemp milk. If you’re staying away from dairy these are two great options.

5. Fat Free Flavored Yogurt
Say it with me: fat-free foods are NOT health foods! I always say fat doesn’t make you fat, sugar makes you fat. Most flavored yogurts pack 15 grams of sugar in 6 oz., and yes, even if they’re flavored with fruit they’re not healthy.

Swap it for: Greek yogurt with fresh cut fruit. Raw blueberries are my favorite – they have the highest antioxidants of all fruits, and taste great. If you want that added sweetness, add a drizzle of honey or agave.

6. Reduced Fat Peanut Butter
One of the biggest benefits of peanuts is that they’re full of monounsaturated fats, aka good fats. Take that out of the peanut butter and what do you have left? Tons of sugar and the same amount of (now empty) calories. Typically whenever you see reduced fat in any product, it means that the fat was replaced with sugar or salt.

Swap it for: Just stick to the real thing and have less of it. Get natural peanut butter with no added sugar. It’s the best way to go for nutrition, and just a little bit will help fill you up.

7. Fruit Cocktail
You may think that anything with fruit in it is healthy for you. But it’s how fruit is preserved that can make a huge difference. A cup of fruit cocktail may be around 110 calories, but has 26 grams of sugar. That is your entire daily value!

Swap it for:  After this article you know that real fruit is ALWAYS better!  A banana or an apple is just as portable as a little plastic cup.

8. Pretzels
While they have 1/10 the fat of potato chips, pretzels have just as much sodium and are nutritionally empty. They’re also made with white flour, which spikes your sugar and just makes you hungry soon after. Look at the back of the bag: Pretzels have a ton of ingredients (a big red flag) and are incredibly calorie dense because the number one ingredient is enriched flour, followed by salt, corn syrup and corn oil. Doesn’t sound too healthy anymore, does it!

Swap it for: Kale chips. For fewer calories, you will get protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals to keep you going. Kale chips will satiate you for way longer than pretzels, without the sugar crash, and they’ve becoming increasingly popular lately for just this reason.

9. Protein Bars
Read. The. Label. Too many protein bars are just processed bricks of artificial ingredients and fillers. Most of them end up being not much more than a candy bar with protein sprinkled in it. You do not want to grab these as snacks, and if it has over 200 calories and more than 8 grams of sugar, leave it on the shelf!

Swap it for: If you’re looking for a protein boost try beans in a meal, damage, or humus and vegetables for a snack. These options will have protein from the source instead of being added on to a candy bar, like many protein bars end up being.

10. Frozen Yogurt
No matter what mix-ins you choose there is absolutely no nutritional value in frozen yogurt. You’re not doing yourself a service by eating fro-yo instead of ice cream. It’s a sugar treat that needs to JUST be a treat!

Swap it for: Just have the real thing in a smaller portion. Half a cup of real ice cream is more satiating, you’ll feel more full and you’ll be eating the real thing. It’s a treat – nothing more, nothing less.

11. Organic Snack Foods
I was shopping with my mother at an upscale grocery store when she picked up a box of organic toaster pastries and started laughing. “Organic or not, a pop tart is still a pop tart!” she said, and she’s right. It’s very popular these days to use the words organic or gluten free, and people think these are synonymous with healthy – they’re not.

Swap it for: A snack that will love you back. Instead of sugary cookies, try fast-baked apples – microwave apple slices with a pinch of cinnamon. Instead of greasy potato chips, try a handful of shelled, unsalted pistachios.

12. Granola Bars
If it’s a choice between a granola bar and skipping a meal, granola bars are useful.  However these bars are packed with sugar, sodium and saturated fat. If you thought a granola bar was healthy as a snack, you might as well have a Snickers! Doesn’t sound all-natural anymore, does it?

Swap it for: Sliced mango and a small piece of dark chocolate. For a fraction of the calories and sugar, you can eat something delicious, nutritious and still satisfy your sweet tooth and snack cravings.

13. Sushi Rolls
Fish, rice & seaweed – why isn’t this healthy? A regular salmon or tuna roll can be a good treat, but it’s the westernized versions you have to watch out for. For example, a salmon rolled with rice and seaweed is 120 calories per serving. A Philadelphia roll with salmon, cream cheese, spicy mayo and house sauce can add up to 500 calories per serving. You might as well have a McDonald’s Big Mac!

Swap it for: Sashimi!  It’s usually accompanied with radish and ginger, and arranged beautifully. Avoid ordering anything spicy or crunchy, as these typically add 300+ calories to your otherwise healthy dish.

14. Veggie Omelet
Like sushi, this food isn’t inherently evil – if you know how to order it. The extras that get added in are what needlessly raise the calorie level. The veggies in your omelet are often cooked in a sea of oil to begin with. Combine that with the oil and butter in the pan and cheese, and you’re looking at over a cup of oil in your seemingly healthy breakfast.

Swap it for: a dry omelet – restaurants know this means no oil in the pan. Ask for steamed veggies, and hold off on the cheese. Remember, the devil is in the details so keep that in mind next time you choose to be healthy!

Day Ten - Exceptional, Superb & Powerful Life!

10.  Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less foods that are manufactured in plants.

Amen!  I have really started to pay attention to what goes into my body.  It is true what they say, your body runs better on pure foods.  If you eat junk, you feel like junk!  I have also learned that if you fill your refrigerator with fruits and vegetables, you will eat them!

Take some time to go through your cupboards and your refrigerator and get rid of the stuff that isn't healthy.  Replace it with stuff that is healthy and watch how your world changes.  When your body feels good, you feel good!

Its a known fact that foods that are natural are the best for you, but what about those days that you're at work and you forgot your lunch?  What about the days that you have to go through the drive through?  Can you eat healthy from a fast food restaurant?   I found a really good article called "Healthy Fast Food" by Maya W. Paul and Lawrence Robinson.  I suggest reading the whole article HERE

Here are some tips from the article:

Tips for making healthy choices at fast food restaurants

  • Make careful menu selections – pay attention to the descriptions on the menu. Dishes labeled deep-fried, pan-fried, basted, batter-dipped, breaded, creamy, crispy, scalloped, Alfredo, au gratin, or in cream sauce are usually high in calories, unhealthy fats, or sodium. Order items with more vegetables and choose leaner meats.
  • Drink water with your meal. Soda is a huge source of hidden calories. One 32-oz Big Gulp of regular cola packs about 425 calories, which can quickly gulp up a big portion of your daily calorie intake. Try adding a little lemon to your water or ordering unsweetened iced tea.
  • “Undress” your food. When choosing items, be aware of calorie- and fat-packed salad dressings, spreads, cheese, sour cream, etc. For example, ask for a grilled chicken sandwich without the mayonnaise. You can ask for a packet of ketchup or mustard and add it yourself, controlling how much you put on your sandwich.
  • Special order. Many menu items would be healthy if it weren't for the way they were prepared. Ask for your vegetables and main dishes to be served without the sauces. Ask for olive oil and vinegar for your salads or order the dressing "on the side" and spoon only a small amount on at a time. If your food is fried or cooked in oil or butter, ask to have it broiled or steamed.
  • Eat mindfully. Pay attention to what you eat and savor each bite. Chew your food more thoroughly and avoid eating on the run. Being mindful also means stopping before you are full. It takes time for your body to register that you have eaten. Mindful eating relaxes you, so you digest better, and makes you feel more satisfied.

Tips for what to AVOID at fast food restaurants

  • Super sized portions. An average fast food meal can run to 1000 calories or more, so choose a smaller portion size, order a side salad instead of fries, and don't super size anything. At a typical restaurant, a single serving provides enough for two meals. Take half home or divide the portion with a dining partner.
  • Salt. Fast food restaurant food tends to be very high in sodium, a major contributor to high blood pressure. Don’t add insult to injury by adding more salt.
  • Bacon. It’s always tempting to add bacon to sandwiches and salads for extra flavor, but bacon has very few nutrients and is high in fat and calories. Instead, try ordering extra pickles, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, or mustard to add flavor without the fat.
  • Buffets – even seemingly healthy ones like salad bars. You'll likely overeat to get your money's worth. If you do choose buffet dining, opt for fresh fruits, salads with olive oil & vinegar or low-fat dressings, broiled entrees, and steamed vegetables. Resist the temptation to go for seconds, or wait at least 20 minutes after eating to make sure you're really still hungry before going back for more.

Day Nine - Exceptional, Superb & Powerful Life

9.  Dream more while you are awake!

Last week was a whirlwind for me.  So many things going on and it just seems like there is never enough time to accomplish everything.  The reason that I wanted to share this list of 40 things is because I felt that it had a lot of great tips that I needed to adopt into my own daily life.  I figured if I could use them, then there's a good chance somebody else out there could use them too!

Walking has become such an important part of the day.  I do a lot of walking at work, and this counts as far as exercise, but doesn't really count under the context of this 40 day motivation that we are doing.  When you take the time to walk and open your eyes and ears to what is around you, you are waking up senses that are kind of sleeping at other times.  If I am walking alone, it is kind of a quiet time for me where I listen to what is going on inside my heart and my body too.   I'm learning that this is an important thing to do.

My life has gotten a little simpler since we made the leap and got a DVR.  We used to schedule our events and such around TV shows; we can't go diving that night because there is just too much on TV.  Phooey!  Well, now, its all set up to record the shows and we can do what we want, when we want.  Looking back, it is so silly to schedule life around the television.  What a ridiculous thought!

Today's tip is to dream more while you are awake.  What does this mean for you?  I made the realization yesterday that exactly a year ago I was on my way to Bonaire for eight days of amazing diving.  What a bummer to be climbing into the cold green waters of the Puget Sound and thinking of the amazing warm blue waters of the Caribbean.  Bad visibility aside, it was a good dive last night and its better than no dive at all!

We want to go back to Bonaire but it just isn't in the budget this year.  We are planning on going sometime next year and I have just started trying to figure out when.  This is where my dreaming comes in.  I have been spending time on the Internet researching and "dreaming" of when we can go and if we should stay somewhere new, and what else we should do while we are on the island.  Dreaming is healthy for me because it is kind of a spirit lifter, thinking and planning for what I want to do.

What are some of the things that you dream about?  Do you take the time to research them?  Are they dreams that you even feel you can achieve?  I think you can do anything that you set your mind to.  Now is a great time to pick something, even your wildest dream and sit down and make a plan so you can make it happen!  Share with us what that dream is and how you're going to make it a reality!

Day Eight - Exceptional, Superb & Powerful Life!

1.  Take a 10-30 minute walk every day.  While you walk, smile.  It is the ultimate antidepressant.

2.  Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day.  Buy a lock if you have to!

3.  Buy or lease a DVR (digital video recorder), record your late night shows and get more sleep!

4.  When you wake up in the morning complete the following statement:  "My purpose is to _______________ today."

5.  Live with the 3 "E's"  - Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy!

6.  Watch more movies, play more games and read more books than you did last year.

7.  Always pray / meditate and make time to exercise...

8.   Spend more time with people over the age of 70 and under the age of 6!

I have a very strong opinion about the elderly of our country.  I am about to hop up on my soap box and share it with you... I hope you all still love me when I'm done....

Are we the only country that sees our elderly as a burden?  I do not understand the mindset of many who place their parents, or grandparents in a nursing home when it becomes too much of a burden to care for them.  I do understand that there is a time when we will be unable to PROPERLY care for them, but that is when we call in help!  These people raised us, they didn't put us in a home when we started to be in the way (well, most of us anyway).

I spent many years in the elderly care business and absolutely love it!  There is so much to learn from the elders of our world.  I could spend hours just listening, and they need to spend hours talking to someone who wants to listen.

I found an article about "How to Reach Out to the Elderly in Your Community"

    • Volunteer to read out loud, play board games or play the piano and sing at a local nursing home or extended care facility. Many seniors love to have visitors, especially if their family lives in a different city or state.
    • 2  Visit your local senior center or community center, and ask about volunteer opportunities. There may be a whole list of possibilities!
    • 3  Offer to get groceries or run errands for someone at a local semi-independent senior community.
    • Give a few hours a week to Meals on Wheels, dropping off dinners to elderly residents of your area.
    • Provide regular rides to someone who no longer drives; ask your local community volunteer coordinators if they know of anyone, or ask at a nearby nursing home.
    • 6  Join a 'Rent-a-Grandma' program. Many senior centers and care facilities invite parents and children to visit so that elderly residents can spend some time with babies, toddlers and even school-age kids.
    • 7  Ask at a nursing home if you and your pet can visit. Some facilities like to have people with well-behaved dogs, cats and other small animals visit the residents.
    • 8  If you are involved with sports and fitness, volunteer to help with physical activities at a local senior center or home.
    • 9  At holiday times, offer to participate in seasonal or spiritual celebrations at a local nursing home or care facility, or invite a senior to share in a holiday dinner at your home.

Ok, I'm done.  On the other side, I LOVE kids too!  I was raised surrounded by cousins and grew up helping care for them as I got older.  I have kids, grand kids and friends with kids.  There is so much to learn from kids too!   Take time away from your troubles; play hide and go seek, make something with play-do.... or finger paint!

This is a given, right?  Isn't being healthy a happy combination of healing your mind, your body and your spirit?  Number 2 of the 40 tips touches on sitting in silence for at least 10 minutes each day.  I have trouble with silence, but have found a new love for guided meditations.  I am addicted! :)

Talking about praying is a wide open subject, interaction is at your discrection, I think we all believe in a higher power, so engage in whoever / whatever that may be.

Exercise.  YES.  That kind of hits with number 1 up above.  I guess this is a reminder to remember yourself, do this for YOU.

We are a week into the 40 tips and I feel good.  How bout you?  Have you joined the Facebook challenge for the 40 tips?  If not, click here and join us.

Day Six - Exceptional, Superb & Powerful Life!

I am all for this one!  I have found that my family really enjoys watching movies together.  It is a big bonding moment that doesn't require anything but to actually be in the same room together experiencing whats on the screen together.   We do have trouble agreeing on a movie at times depending on who is home, but for the most part movie night is awesome!  It seems that the main theme is always horror movies, and sometimes action.  A few times, my daughter and I have gone to the local two dollar theatre to catch a "chick flick."

It seems that these days the games have all gone electronic.  I know that a lot of people think that this is great, and perhaps it is, but it seems that no one sits down at the table and plays a game together.  People will sit and play a game on the computer, on the television, or even on their cell phone, but no one plays board games anymore!  The technology ages have taken away family time!!!  I remember growing up, my mom would have friends over and we would play all kinds of board games till early hours of the morning.  In fact, that is what we did for our New Year's Eve party every year.  Good times!

Books.  Well, since I started school, I am reading a lot.  I did read a few books last year, but not this year at all.  If I sit down to start a new book, I can't focus on it because I am feeling guilty that if I am going to take the time to read, I should probably be reading my school books.  Needless to say, I haven't read any books this year... other than required reading for school.

Now it's your turn!  When is your next movie night?
How bout your next game night?   What book are thinking about reading?

Day Five - Exceptional, Superb & Powerful Life!

That is the thing that I love about these tips!  If I am able to get my 30 minute walk, have my quiet time, get more sleep, and stay focused then I am totally living with ENERGY, ENTHUSIASM, AND EMPATHY!
I found a post on what we are focusing on today... LOVE it!

Energy

People bursting with energy have three things in common: they deeply honor and respect themselves; they completely accept themselves for who they are and don’t take themselves too seriously, and they see challenges as opportunities to be creative. They switch their negative thoughts as rapidly as they switch channels on their TVs with their remotes. Because they see life as a game to play and enjoy, they radiate good health. They are fun to be around, because they love and accept you for who you are.
So how can you become a more energetic person?
  • Stop worrying about things you cannot fix. It’s useless, because nothing good comes of it, and because worrying of any type will drain your mind of energy. If you can fix it, do it; if not, forget it. Worrying whether or not you’re going to get that job you applied for is tiring for your mind: it doesn’t want to stress over needless things, and when your mind becomes stressed, your energy level dips.
  • Stop worrying about other people. People will be people, and there’s nothing you can do about that. You’re not getting more energy by constantly getting angry over how people treat you, or how they constantly cut you off in traffic; you’re losing energy.
  • Stop being angry. Understandably, this is more difficult to do than it sounds, but if you want to live a more energetic life, do it. Getting angry doesn’t solve anything; on the contrary, it usually tightens tension and creates more worries. If your face becomes flushed when something doesn’t go your way, try to forget it — remind yourself that it’s not going to change what happened, and that you’re wasting gratuitous amounts of energy over it.
  • Live life! Constantly wondering about your place in this world, or whether or not you’ll be successful, or what kind of life you’ve lived/are going to live – forget about it. If you keep thinking of who you are, or what you’re going to be, you won’t be much of anything. The key is to act and live life to its fullest. Letting go of those suffocating thoughts will free you up tremendously. And when you’re free of something, you’re more energetic.

Enthusiasm

Enthusiasm is a really powerful thing to use in business, social, and personal matters. With it, one can work for hours on end without rest, and at the end of it still not feel tired at all. If one does feel tired, it is a tiredness that comes with a smile and with a satisfied feeling in your heart.
So how do you develop enthusiasm?
  • To become enthusiastic for achieving a desirable goal, keep your mind on your goal day after day. The more worthy and desirable your objective, the more dedicated and enthusiastic you will become.
  • When you are faced with a task which makes you feel timid and afraid, you can use the self-motivators that appeal to reason such as: Success is achieved by those who try and Where there’s nothing to lose by trying and a great deal to gain if successful by all means try. Then use the self-starter: DO IT NOW and immediately get into action.
  • Understand and act on Professor William James’s statement: “The emotions are not always immediately subject to reason but they are always immediately subject to action”. Feelings, moods and emotions will follow action. If you want to be enthusiastic, act enthusiastically.

Empathy

Empathy enables a person to establish a connection with others and is necessary for mutual interaction and full comprehension of the experience. It is probably one of the most important aspects of being a leader in every situation. Without it, a person is virtually guaranteed to become out of touch with the environment, he or she is in.
  • One for the best ways to develop compassion is to put your self in their shoes. What would it feel like to be them? To have had their experiences, to live their lifestyle, etc. There is a practice of entrainment, which can help you come into a simpatico with them. When you are working directly with a person, breathe with them at the same rate.
  • Imagine you can feel what they feel. It works the best if you can be in some form of physical contact with them, like holding their hand. Imagine your awareness sinks into their body. Notice what you see in your mind’s eye, feel physically, and hear. Bring all of your senses to bear.
Don’t Over do It! Remember “Too Much” of a good thing may begin not to feel as good if the “thing” becomes more of a routine, or an expectation. Set healthy and reasonable boundaries for yourself and don’t overdo it.

I think that this one is going to be a struggle for me.  I am a list maker, so I know what I need to accomplish today, but my purpose?  Hmmmmm.    I am great at figuring out where I want to go and how to get there, but my purpose?  Again, hmmmm.

  • Find a place where you will not be interrupted. Turn off your cell phone.
  • Write the answers to each question down. Write the first thing that pops into your head. Write without editing. Use point form. It’s important to write out your answers rather than just thinking about them.
  • Write quickly. Give yourself less than 60 seconds a question. Preferably less than 30 seconds.
  • Be honest. Nobody will read it. It’s important to write without editing.
